Creating Custom Band Merch That Sells Out

By the MARCO Ideas Unlimited Team

No concert experience is complete without perusing the selection of band merchandise offered for sale! The quintessential table of small band merch and physical media with the giant backer board of custom apparel, headwear, and accessories can be found at concert venues large and small all around the world.

Often the first step to marketing a band, creating custom merch for fans to show off their support is essential for building a band's reputation and a sense of community among fans.

A well-planned spread of band merch offerings can generate buzz AND revenue for up-and-coming bands.

But those new to music marketing often find band merch expensive to produce, with frequent quality problems, and requiring lots of valuable time from band members & management to handle logistics of ordering, warehousing, and shipping.

Our team of band merch idea & creation specialists have collected their insights into the value of good band merch design, unique band merch ideas, and successful music marketing tactics in this deep dive blog entry covering how to create targeted merch your fans will resonate with and buy at every show.

Our President & Sales Manager Tom says:

"We all have our favorite bands and we all love their merch. It’s a great way for us to connect with the musicians who fill our ears with delightful sounds and for us to show off to the world what we like.  Buying merch at their concert also goes a long way to supporting the act, as generally ticket sale money goes to supporting the basic tour expenses like transportation, crew, and regular wages.

Merch sales are where a lot of artists receive a large portion of their income which contributes to their ability to continue producing the sounds.

It’s also a great way to show that we were there and that we saw them live! Not to mention the resale value if your favorite band gets huge... Vintage Rolling Stones tour shirts are selling online for thousands of dollars. Can you imagine if Mick signed it?  When merch goods are signed by the band they increase hugely in resale potential - so make sure when you get it, if you can, get it signed.   Even if the band is just starting out.  Get a vinyl and have the outer package signed, then put it back in the dust sleeve right away to keep it mint.

Have you ever purchased merch at a concert?  Recently, when we saw "Weird Al" Yankovic, my son got the tour shirt and was super excited.  I have to say, it was well designed.

I was glad that he had a nice looking new tee shirt and I was stoked that it was actually screen printed (and well!) and not just a digital transfer. Someone did a great job on these and he wears it often.

There were all kinds of other concert merch things too... Weird Al had koozies, custom bandanas, hat pins, all kinds of branded apparel and hats, vinyl records, tumblers, shoe laces, USB drives and I love how they got wild with it including fidget spinners and little plastic instruments too."

Our Account Manager Ian Miller (who is also a Professional Band Manager!) says:

"Touring bands rely on merchandise as a vital source of income, especially in an era where streaming pays very little per play. Ticket sales often go toward covering basic tour expenses, leaving slim margins for the artists themselves.

Music merchandise that sells - like custom printed tour T-shirts, multi-color enamel hat pins, can cooling Koozies in many shapes and imprint options, and vinyl records amongst many others - can make the difference between a tour that barely breaks even and one that actually sustains a band’s career.

For many independent and mid-level artists, merch sales are one of the few reliable ways to directly support themselves while on the road.

Beyond the financial impact, merchandise helps strengthen the connection between a band and its fans. Buying a shirt or record at a show feels personal. It’s a tangible memory of a specific night, venue, and shared experience.

Fans become walking ambassadors for the band, spreading awareness simply by wearing or using what they bought. This kind of organic promotion is especially powerful for touring bands who are constantly trying to reach new audiences in unfamiliar cities. Peer-based music marketing is, and has always been, an incredibly impactful tool!

Creating good band merchandise also plays an important role in shaping a band’s identity and visual culture. Artwork, logos, and design choices help communicate the band’s aesthetic and values in a way music alone sometimes can’t. On tour, a merch table becomes a physical hub for the band’s world, reinforcing their brand and making them more memorable.

In this way, merch isn’t just a product - it’s an extension of the music and a key tool for long-term growth and survival in a challenging industry."

Our Marketing Coordinator Sam Sage says:

"I'll admit we're a bit biased here at MARCO, but the research does legitimately show that custom branded merchandise is one of the most impactful marketing channels available for any business or brand. When you consider that a musical band functions much like a brand, selling the "product" of their music, philosophies, and vibes, it makes sense why custom merch is the predominant band marketing strategy for acts both large and small.

Tom and Ian have already hit on how vital band merch is for building community and identity among your fan base - complete the in-person concert experience with specifically audience-focused merch that leans into your fan's unique interests and your tour's theme or marketing imagery!

Band merch designs that capture the energy of the concert can become synonymous with that energy in much wider settings - think about how many pieces of Grateful Dead merch like custom flags, stuffed animals, and neon signs you've seen out at neighborhood bars, head shops, or anywhere folks gather to chill with like-minded, easy-going folks.

The right merch design ideas have the potential to become iconic in their own right, drawing in new fans who resonate with the look of your art and want to hear the music behind it.

Some examples of well-executed, on-theme band merch ideas we've created or seen in the wild include Joe Samba's Luau-themed merch sets that include tiki glitter pins and coordinating apparel as shown here (giving fans options for merch they can wear once in a while, or keep visible on their bags or hats constantly!), German band Rammstein's constant new merch releases of unusual items like tool boxes and string lights that play on lyrics of fan-favorite songs, and metalcore band Born of Osiris's custom engraved herb grinders for their predominantly cannabis-friendly audience to use frequently in social settings.

For large scale tours, if budgets allow, consider posting a pre-sale for mocked up enamel pin designs specific to each city or state worth of tour stops. Pick regional themes and add tour dates to make them event mementos - you may be surprised how many you sell before you even invest in the pins themselves!

Hozier did this for his 2025 "Unreal Unearth" North American tour, and his date-specific enamel pins were an incredibly hot seller, with the pre-sale threshold completely selling out before the show in Portland even began.
